Carr: If no deal by camp, 'we won't be talking about it'

All is quiet on the Alameda front, but Derek Carr hopes it doesn't stay that way. The  Oakland Raiders  quarterback, coming off a career season and entering the final year of his rookie deal, faces contract negotiations with the organization on a mega deal that could keep him with the  Raiders  for the long haul. But if a deal isn't done by the start of training camp in July, Carr is ready to table the discussion. "There's nothing new to report right now. I'm hoping that those things will pick up here real soon, which we're expecting anyway," Carr told reporters Tuesday following Oakland's organized team activity. "They've been talking to Tim, my agent, and things like that. But that should get going real soon, I would hope, because once training camp hits, I'm all football. I'm not going to distract my teammates and you guys are going to want to know and things like that. "Trust me, if it's not done by training camp, w...

Mark Sanchez out until training camp with knee injury

Image
Due to an unfortunate, but minor injury, the  Chicago Bears  played a little quarterback carousel on Tuesday. Mark Sanchez, one of three quarterbacks brought on by Chicago this offseason, suffered a knee injury during organized team activites on Tuesday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Sanchez is expected to miss the remainder of OTAs and minicamp, but should be  ready for the start of training camp, per Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune. The injury came on the same day that Chicago intended to waive quarterback Connor Shaw to make room for Victor Cruz. In fact, the Bears announced Shaw's release earlier the day, only to rescind the waiver request following the injury. Rapoport adds that Shaw will see OTA reps in Sanchez's absence. Shaw missed the entire 2016 season with a leg injury. Of course, neither Sanchez nor Shaw was supposed to start Week 1 for the Bears, so this late-May swap, in the grand scheme of things, is of...

Jets reportedly to hire female DBs preseason intern

Image
The  New York Jets  are set to hire their first female coach. The New York Daily News reports that Gang Green intends to hire Collette Smith, the marketing executive and former coach and player for the  New York Sharks  of the Independent Women's Football League. Smith will reportedly work with the defensive backs this summer as a preseason intern. "I'm over the top. I'm humbled and I'm proud," Smith told the Daily News. "This could have happened with any NFL team. But it just so happened that it was with my beloved  New York Jets . This is bigger because of that. God forbid it would have been with the Patriots. But I still would have done it." Smith follows in the footsteps of former Cardinals preseason intern Jen Welter and former  Bills  special teams quality control coach Kathryn Smith, both of whom broke ground as the first part-time and full-time woman coaches in NFL history, respectively. "We as women carry a lo...

Pederson: Competition sharpening Nelson Agholor

Image
For football fans in the spring, anything is possible. For  Eagles  fans in the spring, that means believing in the arrival of 2015 first-round pick Nelson Agholor. In two seasons, Agholor has 59 catches for 648 yards and three touchdowns. One of the last remnants of the Chip Kelly era, Agholor fared better a season ago under new head coach Doug Pederson -- though nowhere near the expectations of a top-tier starter. "As I've said all along, competition, man, sharpens you," Pederson said,  via ESPN.com . "And that's what I've seen from Nelson. He's done a great job already this spring." Added Agholor himself: "I think I was worried about taking such a large leap in a day. It's all about getting better consistently each day, even if it's just a little bit. Some of the best players in this league, they didn't just become really great the first day they're there. It took a process and continuous progression every day, so tha...

Cardinals ready to see 'the best Robert Nkemdiche'

Image
Robert Nkemdiche  had a season to forget in 2016. The  Cardinals  selected the defensive lineman out of Ole Miss with the 29th overall pick, but Nkemdiche only saw the field in five games and registered just three tackles on the entire season. The one headline the rookie made was when his coach Bruce Arians called him out for a lack of"maturity." One year later, Nkemdiche is back at the  Cardinals ' facility, looking to right whatever wrongs derailed his first season as a professional athlete. "It's staying on the path of what I am doing, staying focused, trying to be as pinpoint perfect, not being on the [mental error] sheet and not making minute mistakes," Nkemdiche said to the team's website of his mentality entering 2017. "Keep working hard, take it day by day." Veteran defensive tackle Frostee Rucker said of the second-year pro, "He's changed. For the good. He's changed. "I'm very proud of him. I'm not ...

Sherman calls story on Seahawks' discord 'nonsense'

Image
Richard Sherman  strongly dismisses the reported discord within the  Seattle Seahawks ' locker room. On Thursday, ESPN's Seth Wickersham dropped an in-depth story detailing the growing strained relationship between offensive and defensive players dating back to before their Super Bowl XLIX loss to the  Patriots . Within the story, Wickersham cited sources both on and off the record giving a glimpse inside the locker room. Sherman was the focal point of the article and his inability to get over Malcolm Butler's title-shifting interception. "He's always looking at what other people are doing," a former  Seahawks  assistant coach told Wickersham about Sherman. "He's made it personal. It's your fault we're not winning. It wears guys thin." That was just one of the many points in an article that suggested a rift between Sherman, Russell Wilson and other  Seahawks . "Sherman, who like Wilson declined comment for this s...

Josh Norman anticipates 'bad blood' in NFC East

Image
Players around the league are getting into shape during this week's organized team activities, but Josh Norman is already in midseason form. Even though it's only May, the opinionated  Redskins  cornerback can't wait for the upcoming season, one that he anticipates will be full of intradivisional feuding. In a wide-ranging interview with Bleacher Report's Tyler Dunne, Norman explained in his own detailed fashion how he expects his team's battles with the  Cowboys ,  Giants  and  Eagles  -- and his own with Dez Bryant, Odell Beckham and Alshon Jeffery -- will transpire. "Trust me when I tell you, it's going to be bad blood this year," Norman predicted. "You think the NFC East didn't like each other before? This year right here? There's going to be a lot of fines and maybe some suspensions. I'm going to be honest with you: This s--- is going to get really ugly. Because I do have a safety [D.J. Swearinger]...

Cody Kessler Diet may be your summer salvation

Image
It's Memorial Day weekend , the start of beach season in the United States. Is your body ready for primetime? If not, don't panic. Real beach/lake weather doesn't start for several more weeks. And here's even better news: We have a diet that could help you achieve the hot bod you've always wanted. The beacon in times of darkness, as always, is Cody Kessler. The  Browns  quarterback was looking to shed weight and gain strength heading into his second season, so he cooked up a plan with the team dietitian. The same exact thing, every day, for three months.

Goodell responds to Marvin Lewis' celebration criticism

Image
It appears Roger Goodell isn't too concerned with what Marvin Lewis thinks about player celebrations. A short time after Lewis expressed his disappointment over  NFL owners voting Tuesday to relax rules regarding on-field displays of bliss and glee, the NFL commissioner didn't seem too keen on rehashing prior conversations he's had with the  Bengals  coach. "Well, I've heard it from Marvin before," Goodell said after the conclusion of Tuesday's Spring League Meeting in Chicago. "We've had these discussions over the last couple years. And I think the players will prove him wrong on that. I think the players will do this in a way that will be responsible, show good sportsmanship, and do it in a way I think is entertaining but also respectful." The push to no longer penalize or fine players for spontaneously showing off their signature celebration dance moves has found plenty of allies among players and fans alike. Lewis, however, feels i...

Medical tents for players will be on NFL sidelines in '17

Image
Medical tents will be a permanent fixture on NFL sidelines this season. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the development at the Spring League Meeting on Tuesday, a few months after the small, mobile units gained popularity at the college level for their ability to aid doctors and trainers in doing their job without a raucous crowd bearing down on them from the stands. "We also spent a fair amount of time on health and safety as we normally do," Goodell said. "Dr. [Allen] Sills, our new chief medical officer is here, and he obviously made a presentation to the membership. He's only three weeks into the job, but there are several things that he reported on, including this year we will be using medical examination tents on the sidelines which you may have seen to some extent on the college level. "It's an opportunity for us to have a better examination because it will ensure privacy for a short period of time so doctors can go ahead and...

Vikings' video shows Teddy Bridgewater throwing

Image
Hey, Teddy's back. The  Minnesota Vikings   posted a video Tuesday afternoon  that showed quarterback Teddy Bridgewater making progress in his ongoing recovery from a devastating knee injury. The 38-second clip shows Bridgewater in slow motion, taking various drops and firing footballs in his signature two gloves during organized team activities. The quarterback, who's 2016 season ended before it began because of a gruesome knee injury, was sporting a noticeable brace and sleeve on his surgically repaired knee. While it's unclear how much work Bridgewater actually did in the  Vikings ' workout Tuesday, the video is a good sign for the  Vikings  and the QB. Bridgewater suffered a dislocated knee and a complete tear of his ACL just nine months ago, prompting coach Mike Zimmer to wonder this offseason if the quarterback would ever play again. Even the  Vikings ' front office was so concerned about the injurythey declined his fif...

Odell Beckham gets biggest shoe deal in NFL history

Image
Odell Beckham just scored the biggest contract of his life -- and it has nothing to do with the  New York Giants . On Tuesday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that  Beckham re-upped with Nike  in what is the most lucrative deal ever for an NFL player. Various outlet reported the deal is worth $25 million over five years. This is some outrageous side cash for Beckham, who is due to make "just" $3.3 million with the Giants  in the upcoming season. His annual salary will jump up to $8.5 million next year after the  Giants  picked up his fifth-year option in April. Free agency will bring even more riches if Beckham can remain healthy and productive. Beckham's new deal with Nike came with some quality insider drama. Nice Kicks reported that the receiver had met with Nike and Adidas separately, and Nike waited until today's deadline to formally match the massive Adidas offer. (Apparently, the shoe game is not dissimilar to restrict...

Roberto Aguayo needs to stop missing kicks pronto

Image
Last month,  we pumped up  the upcoming training camp battle between Bucs kickers  Roberto Aguayo and veteran newcomer  Nick Folk  as one of the most fascinating subplots of this summer's  Hard Knocks . Based on what we're hearing out of OTAs in Tampa, it's fair to wonder if there will be any drama left for NFL Films producers to document by the time August rolls around. Aguayo missed "at least three" of four field-goal attempts while kicking toward narrower-than-usual goalposts during Tuesday's practice,  according to JoeBucsFan.com . Check out this gruesome dispatch from Mr. Joe: The first clanked the right goal post from 30 yards. After his third effort, practice went silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ninety players plus coaches, many just BSing and drinking water during the kicking period, were quiet. To make matters worse, Folk -- who already threw down the  "I've got kids to feed" gauntlet  upon signing with Tampa -- drilled al...
